March 2009 - During his press rounds for the independent film
Adventureland,
Ryan Reynolds was, of course, asked about his part in
X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds makes his
X-Men debut playing Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool) in the highly anticipated spin-off from the
X-Men film trilogy.
Ryan Reynolds on Audiences Caring About His Character:
"Yes, I think you will actually care about him. You'll be curious about him. I mean, beyond the film you'll be curious about him because I suppose I don’t really… I play Wade Wilson and I play Deadpool, but the character I play as Deadpool, I personally - Fox may differ with me - but I personally don’t consider him to be Deadpool. I consider him to be what Deadpool becomes. Or sorry, what Deadpool, the thing that Deadpool came from, really. I mean, so it doesn't carry on past that because the movie’s called
Wolverine."
Ryan Reynolds Would be Interested in a Deadpool Spin-off:
"Yes. I love the character. I mean I've always loved the character. I remember reading in one of the comic books, the Deadpool comic books, and somebody asked Deadpool in the comic book what he looks like and he said he’s a cross between a Shar-Pei and Ryan Reynolds. That's pretty awesome. And I really want to play this guy at some point so, you know, I thought that was really cool. But, you know, it’s a guy that knows he's in a comic book. I mean it’s like how hard is it to shoot that properly? So that's not something they put in
Wolverine and nor would it belong in that universe at all."
Ryan Reynolds Says the Additional Shots Filmed Where Not Reshoots:
"A lot of people thought that but actually when I signed, when they approached me to play Deadpool I was committed to doing two other movies – a movie called
Paper Man, which was a small independent movie in New York City and they were shooting
Wolverine in Australia so that made things a little bit difficult, and
The Proposal - so I had a full plate already. So the idea was to shoot the Deadpool stuff after the principle photography had finished. So in effect they weren’t really re-shoots, they were just additional shots and scenes that we needed to pick up. Yes, they didn’t add really anything beyond the script."
Ryan Reynolds Compares Wolverine to Working on Blade Trinity:
"Well, it’s like night and day. I won't get into it too much, but I’ll say that the
Blade set was extraordinarily dysfunctional so to work on a movie like
Wolverine, it was incredible. You know,
Hugh Jackman is as classy as he is talented. I mean that group of guys, you have an enormous, there's all these enormous personalities in one room yet everybody was really amazingly chummy. People were just hanging out. Egos were checked at the door, I guess. I don’t know what was going on but I haven’t been on a set that harmonious in a long time, so it was pretty cool."
