X-Men - The Last Stand on DVD

The Bottom Line

Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) took over directing duties from Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) who left a short while after being hired to helm the film following Bryan Singer's decision to jump ship to work on Superman Returns. Ratner does a fair job of completing the X-Men trilogy, however X-Men: The Last Stand lacks the emotional impact and subtleties of the first two X-Men movies.

Guide Review - X-Men: The Last Stand DVD Review

Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart are among the familiar faces returning for the last X-Men movie to feature all the central characters. In this final film of the series, a cure's been discovered and its availability is the source of a split among the mutants.

Magneto voices the strongest opposition to the cure. Rallying his troops, Magneto declares war on those who'd force a cure on his fellow mutants. He's determined to secure the source of the cure by any means necessary - including using Phoenix to destroy everything that stands in his way.

The X-Men aren't supporters of the cure but also don't back Magneto's call to arms and his plan to take on the government and kill innocent people. The battle kicks into high gear when the two opposing forces meet up for a final showdown in San Francisco.

The Bonus Features

It's worth sitting through a second screening of X-Men: The Last Stand just to listen to the commentary track by director Ratner and screenwriters Penn and Kinberg. These three should form their own comedy act and do stand-up in clubs. Their audio track is the best reason to purchase the DVD. Other than their commentary, there's not much else in the way of extra material. Since this is the 'last' film of the series, you'd expect there to be, at the very minimum, Making Of or other behind-the-scenes featurettes. But instead all that's included is a collection of deleted scenes and an additional audio track featuring Avi Arad.
