Joss Whedon and Warner Bros Pictures have parted ways. Whedon's been working on the script for a Wonder Woman movie since March 5, 2005 but, according to a post on Whedonesque.org, he and the studio didn't see eye to eye on the storyline. Whedon wrote, "I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked."
Whedon also stressed that despite all the rumors and months of speculation, he never had any particular actress in mind to play the lead role. In his letter to fans Whedon said, "Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistent front-runner. I didn't have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script."
The decision to leave Wonder Woman was based on creative differences. "Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional," explained Whedon. "We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work."
Whedon doesn't have to hunt for a new project to fill his time. The writer/director already has Goners in the works at Universal, the same studio that released Serenity - Whedon's big screen version of the TV series Firefly.
Universal picked up Whedon's spec script for Goners in September 2005, but that project's been on the back burner while Whedon worked on Wonder Woman. In an interview with Variety back in 2005, Whedon described Goners as "the story of a young woman's journey that involves a great deal of horror and some heroics. It's certainly darker than Serenity, and there are a lot of left turns along the way."
