Kate Winslet has taken over the lead role in the movie The Reader according to Variety. Winslet will be filling the gap left by Nicole Kidman who had to back out of the project due to her pregnancy. Kidman and hubby Keith Urban are expecting their first child in mid-2008.

Ralph Fiennes is still onboard the film, which is currently in production in Berlin. Stephen Daldry (The Hours) is directing the film with Sydney Pollack, Anthony Minghella, and Scott Rudin producing.

Adapted from the Bernhard Schlink novel by David Hare, The Reader follows 15-year-old high school student Michael Berg who enters into a relationship with a much older woman who has a dark secret.

Winslet will next be seen in Revolutionary Road directed by her husband Sam Mendes. Fiennes has Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and In Bruges scheduled to hit theaters this year.
