"Whale Rider" (2003)Set in the present, "Whale Rider" re-interprets a 1000-year-old legend belonging to the Maori of a particular coastal village. Who will become leader of the Ngati Konohi? By tradition it should be the eldest son. But a crisis occurs when the hereditary male child dies at birth and is survived by his twin sister whom their father names “Paikea” - the lineage is broken.
