Guide Review - 'We Own the Night' DVD Review
Bobby Green (Phoenix) is a hotshot nightclub manager with a gorgeous girlfriend, Amada (Mendes), tons of friends, and plans for expanding his boss' empire. The only aspect of Bobby's life that's not fully functional is his relationship with his family. Only his girlfriend knows Bobby's related to the deputy chief of police, Burt Grusinsky (Duvall), as well as the newly appointed police captain, Joseph Grusinsky (Wahlberg), in charge of a special narcotics unit. And Bobby wants to keep it so that only Amada knows about his family connections as a lot of his friends and nightclub patrons are heavy into drugs.
But Bobby's ability to keep his family and his business separate comes crashing down when Joseph raids Bobby's nightclub looking for a specific Russian drug dealer. Bobby finds himself thrust into the center of the investigation when the Russian fights back by going after Joseph as well as Bobby's father in an effort to thwart the investigation.
The Bonus Features
Writer/director James Gray delivers one of most entertaining commentary tracks in years on the We Own the Night DVD. Gray not only provides real insight into the film, but he does it with a lot of personality. The DVD also includes three well put together featurettes - 'Tension: Creating We Own the Night,' 'Police Action: Filming Cops, Cars and Chaos,' and 'A Moment in Crime: Creating Late '80s Brooklyn'. These behind-the-scenes featurettes take a look at the action sequences, the cast, and even the production design of the film.
Overall, the featurettes are an above average lot with the commentary track head and shoulders above the norm.
