Tom Cruise, Steve Spielberg, aliens, and kids in peril proved to be an irresistible draw at the box office. "War of the Worlds" opened with an estimated $34.606 million worldwide box office tally, with $21.256 of that coming from ticket sales in the United States.

"War of the Worlds," which opened in 3,908 theaters across America on Wednesday, June 29, 2005, broke studio records and now stands as Paramount Pictures' largest opening day in history. "War of the Worlds" also marks the largest opening day for a Tom Cruise movie.

Rob Friedman, Vice Chairman of the Paramount Pictures Motion Pictures Group, said, "We're ecstatic; this is just the beginning of a long and successful run at box offices around the globe. We've got a dream team of Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg and they've both delivered yet again."

Paramount president of distribution Wayne Lewellen told The Hollywood Reporter, "We are thrilled. It's an absolute home run for the studio. It's on the high side of what we were hoping for. Because of Spielberg and Cruise's involvement in the film and the tremendous job of marketing and publicity, there was a tremendous amount of interest in the picture from the public -- and from all four demographic groups."
