Would you like to develop your own projects?
I’ve always liked new writing. I mean there are a lot of actresses who want to do the classics and theater, but I’ve always liked new writing. And of course, doing this with Mike is the ultimate experience because all the actors with him were creating the script. Not the story, because he has that in his head. But we’re just creating those characters and feeding into it so heavily. That’s the ultimate. When he got his screenplay nomination, he said he feels that’s for everyone. That’s him on behalf of all of the actors. I’ve had that experience of creating it.

When I finished the film I then did a new play in West End and I found it very, very hard to look at these words that someone had written that I didn’t know what or who that was. So that was very hard. But it’s getting easier because I have to pay my mortgage so I have to work (laughing). You have to get on with it.

This is a tough year of competition for women at the Oscars.
Well, listen. The day the nomination comes out you’ve got five in this category, five actresses whose performances are being celebrated in very different films, very different budgets, very different stories. And in a way you think the buck should stop here now. But they have to have a night’s entertainment, they want a winner, and that’s up to other people. It’s wonderful to be in such a strong category. That’s pretty wonderful. I do think that I’ve won a nomination and that’s it. And that’s wonderful for me. It’s pretty nice.

Have your script offers increased since being nominated as Best Actress?
I’ve had a few this week, yeah.

"Spider-Man 3?"
[Said with tongue in cheek] I reckon. "Spider-Man 3: The Web." The fly in the ointment, that’s what I’d be (laughing). I can’t really project what will happen. In a way, I’ve done the best job of my life. It’s so precious to me, this piece of work. I’m so proud of being part of all those amazing actors in that film. I don’t know what the opportunities are right now for me, so I’ll just have to wait and see.

Do you have any projects lined up?
Not now. I’m doing all of this now. But I did a film that will be out next year called “Nanny McPhee,” which Emma Thompson has written and is starring in. Why I’m not starring in it I don’t know. But it’s her film so I suppose she had to be in it (laughing). So that’s a lovely children’s film that will be out later on in the year.
