Max Bialystock is a theatrical producer who, along with his CPA Leo Bloom, hits upon the perfect plan to embezzle big bucks: get backers to contribute more money than needed to put on a Broadway play - a play the two are deadsure will be a disastrous flop. When the show closes due to bad reviews and lack of ticket sales, they can then pocket the money and be rich. But things don't go according to plan when their sure-fire flop, "Springtime for Hitler," turns out to be a huge hit.
This film version of "The Producers" is based on Mel Brooks' smash hit play "The Producers," which was based on Brooks' 1968 movie of the same name. Sounds confusing, doesn't it? It's not. The only thing you need to know is that this 2005 version comes to the big screen with an impressive pedigree. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick reprise their Tony Award-winning roles and Tony Award-winner Stroman directed/choreographed the original Broadway production of "The Producers."
Universal Pictures plans to release "The Producers" in a couple of theaters on December 16th and then expand the musical comedy on December 25, 2005 and January 13, 2006.
