With a budget said to be in the $200 million range, Universal Studios is betting Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" fans will belly up to the ticket counter to check out his latest action-adventure epic. And if the buzz surrounding the December 14th release of "King Kong" is any indication, Universal Studio bigwigs could be in for a very merry holiday season.
Like the 1933 "King Kong" film (written/directed by Merian C Cooper), this edition features a trip to a tropical island, a beautiful blonde, and a gigantic hairy ape. Naomi Watts stars as Depression-era actress Ann Darrow, the object of Kong's affection. Jack Black plays an entrepreneur who is struggling to make a name for himself as a filmmaker. Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody co-stars as Jack Driscoll, a NY playwright and the movie's unlikely hero. Andy Serkis stood in for Kong on the set, wearing a motion capture suit similar to the one he sported as Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
