2008 could be Robert Downey Jr's summer. He's starting the season off with
Iron Man and finishing up with the summer with
Tropic Thunder, a twisted comedy from writer/director/actor Ben Stiller. If you caught the trailer, then you know Downey sports a much darker complexion than normal in the film. Downey stars as a white Oscar-caliber actor named Kirk Lazarus who's cast as a black soldier. Instead of changing the part to fit the actor, Lazarus dyes his skin to fit the role. Is it politically incorrect? Yes. Controversial? Most definitely. Funny? That remains to be seen, but
Tropic Thunder could quite possibly be the sleeper hit of the summer. Downey, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, and a cameo by Tom Cruise in a fat suit... At the very least it should be interesting.
Synopsis: Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. lead the ensemble cast of Tropic Thunder, an action comedy about a group of self-absorbed actors who set out to make the most expensive war film ever produced. After ballooning costs force the studio to cancel the movie, the frustrated director refuses to stop shooting, leading his cast into the jungles of Southeast Asia, where they encounter real bad guys.
Tropic Thunder enters the box office battle on August 15, 2008.
