Robert Downey Jr stars as Tony Stark/Iron Man in 'Iron Man.'
Director Jon Favreau sounds like an eager fanboy when he talks about directing the comic book-inspired Iron Man movie. And the Zathura/Elf director did his research and knew the Iron Man history backwards and forwards before taking on the project. Director Favreau is fully aware of the passionate, diehard Iron Man fans who'll be analyzing and second-guessing every single decision he made in bringing the Tony Stark/Iron Man story to life on the big screen. He kept that fanbase in mind as he put together the project and did his best in the months leading up to the film's release to keep fans in the loop - without giving away too many spoilers.

One thing the fans seem to have all agreed on leading up to the film's release is the casting of Robert Downey Jr in the lead role. Downey Jr's checkered personal history fits the Tony Stark vibe, and then throwing Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard, and Gwyneth Paltrow into the mix in supporting roles only helps lend more credibility to the comic book-inspired project.

Synopsis: Iron Man is the story of Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to America, Tony must come to terms with his past. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.

Iron Man flies into theaters on May 2, 2008.
