Clint Eastwood's latest directorial effort, Changeling, stars Angelina Jolie in another role in which she's a woman suffering through disappearance of a loved one (she did this last year as Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart). But Jolie playing another woman going through the loss of a family member isn't what makes Changeling so compelling. What I find fascinating about Changeling is the origin of the story.

Changeling's based on the Wineville Chicken Murders which took place in 1928 in Riverside County, CA (Wineville's name was later changed to Mira Loma because of the notoriety of this murder case). The story follows the events surrounding the disappearance of 10 year old Walter Collins. Walter's mother, Christine (played by Jolie), reported her son missing on March 10, 1928 after coming home from work and finding their house empty. Five months after filing the missing persons report, the police announced her son had been found. But Christine never accepted the boy who claimed to be her son was actually her Walter. Events then unfolded which called into question Christine's sanity as well as the scruples of the Los Angeles Police Department.

In order to keep this spoiler-free, I won't disclose further details on the actual case. But the true story of the Wineville Chicken Murders is so riveting, so complex, it's a wonder no major motion picture has been made prior to this adaptation.

Changeling hopes to thrill moviegoers on October 24, 2008.
