Because
Ghost Rider's release date has been delayed a few times, Nicolas Cage has had plenty of opportunities while out doing press junkets for other films to discuss his starring role in the film. Cage, an admitted comic book fan who has every
Ghost Rider comic book ever published, says he's always had a soft spot in his heart for the Ghost Rider character. "I enjoyed the image of the skull on fire when I was a boy and the mythology of it," explained Cage, "the Faust-like storyline was so original for a Marvel comic book character. There really isn't any other one quite like Ghost Rider, and that's why I think he's fresh. I think it's time for a new kind of superhero. I'm speaking to the
Ghost Rider fans step out! We all know who we are."
For those not familiar with the Ghost Rider comics, the story follows motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze who sells his soul to Mephistopheles in order to save his dying father. The decision means he must part with the woman he loves, Roxanne (Eva Mendes). However, years later both Roxanne and Mephistopheles re-enter Johnny's life. Striking another deal with the devil, Blaze agrees to become the fiery Ghost Rider and becomes an agent for justice - and vengeance.
Ghost Rider appears in theaters on February 16, 2007.
