Whatever you've heard about Jennifer Hudson's scene-stealing performance in
Dreamgirls is all true. Newcomer Hudson absolutely shines in the big screen adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical. Taking on the role Jennifer Holliday made famous on stage, Hudson not only amazes with her incredibly textured singing voice but also acts the pants off her more experienced co-stars. Believe it or not, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Beyonce, and Anika Noni Rose all pretty much fade into the scenery whenever ex-
American Idol contestant Hudson is on the screen. Yes, she's that good.
Bill Condon (writer, Gods and Monsters) directed the film and adapted the screenplay from the stage musical's original book by Tom Eyen. Dreamgirls is set in the 1960s to mid-70s and follows The Dreamettes - Deena (Beyonce), Effie (Hudson) and Lorrell (Noni Rose) - from back-up singers into full-fledged musical sensations. As the trio takes off, their new manager (Foxx) pulls lead singer Effie out of the spotlight and pushes Deena into the forefront, changing the group's dynamics and effectively crushing Effie's chances at a real career.
Dreamgirls performs its song and dance act in theaters beginning December 15, 2006.
