Oscar nominated filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron (
Y Tu Mama Tambien) helms the thriller
Children of Men starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, and Claire-Hope Ashitey. Based on the novel by P. D. James and set in 2027,
Children of Men takes place in a world in which the human population is facing extinction. 19 years have passed since the last child was born on Earth, and hope for the future is at its most bleak. Then a miracle appears in the form of a young woman eight months pregnant. Kee (played by newcomer Ashitey) must be protected at all costs if there's any hope at all for our survival on this planet.
One of the more interesting statements about the tone of the film comes from director Cuaron. "When I make a film, it is from my standpoint - so the fact
that I am a hopeful person 'taints' this film. Humanity has an amazing talent for
destruction. But also, we can show solidarity and an ability to come through problems
together. In the end, Children of Men isn't so much about humanity being destructive -
it's more about ideologies coming between people's judgment and their actions that is at
work in this story."
Children of Men hopes to thrill audiences on December 25, 2006.
