Have you watched the trailer for "The Fountain?" If you not only answered yes to that but you also claim to have a full understanding of the story from the snippets of scenes edited together in the trailer, then you're ready for the movie and don't need any further explanation. For the rest of us who want more clarification, the official synopsis from Warner Bros Pictures reads:

"'The Fountain' is an odyssey about one man's thousand-year struggle to save the woman he loves. His epic journey begins in 16th century Spain, where conquistador Tomas Creo (Hugh Jackman) commences his search for the Tree of Life, the legendary entity believed to grant eternal life to those who drink of its sap. As modern-day scientist Tommy Creo, he desperately struggles to find a cure for the cancer that is killing his beloved wife Isabel (Rachel Weisz). Traveling through deep space as a 26th century astronaut, Tom begins to grasp the mysteries of life that have consumed him for more than a century."

I don't claim to have "The Fountain" figured out but I do know that I like the cast and I'm a fan of writer/director Darren Aronofsky's work. Pushed back from being released in 2005, as I write this Warner Bros still hasn't settled on a 2006 release date. Here's hoping the studio gives Aronofsky whatever time he needs to edit his vision into one that will live up to the 2+ years of hype that surrounds the project.
