"Dreamgirls" follows the rise of a trio of women - Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Deena (Beyonce Knowles) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) - who are part of an all-girl group, The Dreamettes. Discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor, Jr (Jamie Foxx), The Dreamettes are given the chance to enter the big league as the back-up singers for headliner James 'Thunder' Early (Eddie Murphy). However their status as back-up singers doesn't last long. Taylor takes control and changes their style and sound, and renames them The Dreams. But their manager still isn't satisfied. He continues to push Deena into the spotlight, until it's all about her and not about the group.

The idea of making "Dreamgirls" into a feature film had been kicked around for a while, and there were lots of casting rumors leading up to the final announcement of the film's stars. Everyone from "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino to pop star Usher were said to be considered for roles in the big screen movie musical. But somehow it just seems right that one third of the now-defunct girl group Destiny's Child would wind up as the main star of "Dreamgirls." Knowles' own solo singing career took off while her co-horts in Destiny's Child haven't been quite as lucky thus far.
