Tom Hanks...Julia Roberts....Director Mike Nichols... Quite the combination, isn't it? Throw in the fact the film they collaborated on -
Charlie Wilson's War - is based on incredible yet true events and you've got all the elements needed for a must-see movie. However, not to put a damper on things, don't count your chickens before they're hatched. Remember the buzz surrounding Tom Cruise, Robert Redford and Meryl Streep together for
Lions for Lambs? Yet something tells me this 'war' movie won't be so sheepish when it comes to announcing its presence at the box office.
The Story
Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson (Hanks) was a party animal with a sharp mind and a desire to help the underdog. At the urging of millionaire Joanne Herring (Roberts), Charlie threw his support behind the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters) in their efforts to rid Afghanistan of the Russians.
Along with CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman), Wilson and Herring went to extreme lengths to forge alliances in support of the Mujahideen. Their efforts paid off as funding for covert operations dramatically increased and Russian troops were forced out of Afghanistan.
Charlie Wilson's War heads into box office battle on December 21, 2007.
