But the big screen wasn't the final stop for Hairspray. Fast-forward a decade and change, and Hairspray the movie spawned a Tony Award-winning Broadway play. And now in 2007 the circle closes with a brand spanking new Hairspray film. Newcomer Nicole Blonsky* takes over the part of Tracy Turnblad with John Travolta donning a fatsuit to play Tracy's mom, Edna. There's singing and dancing and partying '60s style in this remake which hopes to captivate a whole new generation of hairhopping fans.
The Story - Tracy Turnblad wins a spot as a dancer on The Corny Collins Show and sets out to break down barriers and integrate the show. With help from Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifah) and her best friend Penny (Amanda Bynes), Tracy turns the show on its head - and even finds a little time for romance.
* Maybe once the film comes out we'll get the answer to the question that's been nagging me for months. Is it Nicole or Nikki? Please settle on one and stick to it so I can stop changing the cast list and photo credits.
Hairspray begins its song and dance routine on July 20, 2007.
