"The Golden Compass" Movie Preview

Last year Eragon took the title for the first film to promote itself one year in advance of its release. New Line Cinema snagged that honor this year with its mailing of gorgeous oversized booklets promoting The Golden Compass. The Golden Compass book is actually so beautiful I hate to thumb through it for fear of smudging one of the pages. It's kind of like one of those candles you receive as a present and don't want to burn because it's too pretty. You know what I mean?

Based solely on the promotional material provided by the studio, I can say my interest level went up considerably for this end-of-the-year release. Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and 12-year-old newcomer Dakota Blue Richards star in this first film of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy and if it comes across looking anywhere near as interesting on the big screen as it does in print, then the folks at New Line should be mighty pleased.

The Story - Lyra exists in an alternative world, one in which our souls manifest themselves as animals and fantastical creatures are part of the norm. When 12-year-old Lyra (Richards) tries to rescue a friend who's been kidnapped by The Gobblers, she ends up on a quest to save her world and ours.

The Golden Compass navigates its way into theaters on December 7, 2007.
