And Universal Pictures said, "Let there be a sequel," and behold there was a sequel. Okay, I apologize for that one but it was as if a higher power made me write it. No, seriously, I'm through with the Biblical references, but Universal Pictures isn't.
Bruce Almighty made the ungodly sum of $475 million worldwide and ensured there would be a sequel, prequel or spin-off in the works. What the powers that be at Universal might not have anticipated when they greenlit the sequel was just how much money was going to be spent in putting it together. The
Los Angeles Times reported back in October 2006 that the budget was expected to reach $175 million. That's an incredible amount of money to be riding on the backs of Steve Carell and director Tom Shadyac.
Jim Carrey's nowhere in sight and instead the story this time around focuses on Steve Carell's supporting character from the first movie, Evan Baxter (hence the film's title). Carell's megapopularity all but guarantees that audiences won't blink an eye at the lack of Carrey in Evan Almighty. And personally, I thought Carell's character was the best thing about the first movie anyway. He stole the film as the newscaster who blabbered away in a nonsensical language.
The Story - God (Morgan Freeman) returns to Earth to tell Evan Baxter (now a politician) that it's time to build an ark.
Evan Almighty will miraculously appear in theaters on June 22, 2007.
