SCI FI's Controversial Profile of M. Night Shyamalan

A Glimpse at the Filmmaker's Private Life

By Rebecca Murray, About.com

NEW YORK, June 17, 2004 - In an unprecedented move, SCI FI Channel will broadcast a controversial look at Academy Award-nominated writer/director M. Night Shyamalan entitled "The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan" on July 18, 2004 at 8-11PM (ET/PT). Sanctioned back in the Fall by the reclusive filmmaker, this three-hour project was helmed by Academy Award-nominated director Nathaniel Kahn ("My Architect") and producer Callum Greene ("Lost in Translation"/"3AM") exclusively for SCI FI Channel.

SCI FI spent over four months trailing the famously enigmatic Shyamalan, who granted the channel unprecedented, exclusive access to his intensely guarded personal lifestyle, as well as his filmmaking process (on the set of "The Village"). What SCI FI viewers will see on July 18 is a revealing look that lays bare the external forces which have helped shape Shyamalan's vision. SCI FI Channel viewers will witness extraordinary unguarded moments, as well as attempts by the acclaimed filmmaker to shut down the production.

Academy Award-nominated writer/director M. Night Shyamalan has been working in the realm of the fantastic and challenging and enchanting audiences worldwide with his unique explorations of the human psyche -- leaving viewers wondering what is real and what is illusion. His body of work includes the international blockbusters "The Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable," and "Signs," which have combined for over $1.25 billion in worldwide box office. Shyamalan continues to work from his Blinding Edge Pictures production company just outside Philadelphia, an area that serves as his creative inspiration and is prominently featured in his films.

SCI FI Channel is a television network where "what if" is what's on. SCI FI fuels the imagination of viewers with original series and events, blockbuster movies and classic science fiction and fantasy programming, as well as a dynamic Web site (http://www.scifi.com/) and magazine. Launched in 1992, and currently in 83 million homes, SCI FI Channel is a network of NBC Universal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies.
