The Bottom Line

Batman and Wolverine face off...rather Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman face off in The Prestige, a dramatic thriller from Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, Memento). The plot takes a lot of turns and features great performances from the entire ensemble, but Nolan chose to show his hand a little too soon on some of the plot twists. Still, The Prestige is fairly solid entertainment and a great example of how to portray magic onscreen.

Guide Review - "The Prestige" DVD Review

In The Prestige, two Victorian era magicians start off as associates and then square off in a battle of skills.

Bale stars as Alfred Borden, a man who's more about the tricks than entertaining the audience. Robert Angier (Jackman) is his polar opposite, a real showman who believes more in wowing the audience with his personality and stage presence rather than his tricks.

Following a horrible tragedy the two men become bitter enemies, with Robert dedicated to one-upping Alfred onstage. But Robert's not satisfied with just showing up his rival. Instead Robert's set on tearing Alfred down, no matter what the cost or who might get hurt in the process.

The Bonus Features

Five featurettes make up 'The Director's Notebook: The Cinematic Sleight of Hand of Christopher Nolan.' The featurettes take viewers behind the scenes, showcasing different aspects of bringing magic, the Victorian era, and the story to life onscreen. Interviews with the cast and others provide a real insight into what went into making The Prestige work.
