Interviews with the Screenwriters of the Romantic Comedy, "The Perfect Man"

Gina Wendkos on the Appeal of “The Perfect Man:” Wendkos wrote the screenplays for “Princess Diaries” and “Princess Diaries 2” so she’s no stranger to working on projects aimed at teen girls. But her interest in “The Perfect Man” actually stemmed from her own youth, growing up for a while with a single mom. “I understood the idea of moving around a lot because I moved around a lot so the idea that [with] this girl, that the mom moved every time her life went bad I really responded to. And I understood the idea of wanting to create a fantasy for your mom in that you want to just do what you can to help her. The basis of this story was there and I was drawn to it because of the potential.”

Wendkos on Writing with Specific Actors in Mind: “I did in this case because when I came to it Hilary Duff was already attached. I studied everything that she’d done for television or film. I developed this empathy for how she phrased things and then I wrote toward that kind of syntax, I guess you call it. And you know I got comfortable with her rhythm and I wrote towards that. And then discovering of course that she’s a physical comedienne and I would lend the character to that.”

Gina Wendkos on Her Definition of the Perfect Man: “The perfect man is one that knows all of your flaws and finds a way to think they’re charming.”

Michael McQuown on What Interested Him in “The Perfect Man:” “I knew the concept was that strong. Heather [Robinson] had told me about it. It stuck in my mind for a couple of years and literally I was ready to give up on Hollywood and I said, ‘Well, you know what? This will be the last thing I write. This doesn’t sell, then that’s it.’ I wrote it, sold it, and it was shot – all within a year.”

McQuown on Future Projects: McQuown’s interested in directing and he's just finishing up editing his independent film, “Digit X.” McQuown says his dream project is "Millennium Walker," a $100 million concept that’s generating some interest. “You know, the Wachowski brothers did their low budget and then went on to do ‘The Matrix.’ I hope to follow a career path like that.”
