The Bottom Line

There were three films released in 2006 that featured magic as a central theme - The Prestige, Scoop, and The Illusionist. Of the threesome, The Illusionist is easily the best of the bunch. A terrific mix of drama and romance, The Illusionist is an absorbing film that transports its audience into the world of magic.

Guide Review - The Illusionist DVD Review

Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, Jessica Biel and Rufus Sewell star in the film adaptation of Steven Millhauser's short story, Eisenheim the Magician. Writer/director Neil Burger expands on Millhauser's tale set at the turn of the century in Vienna.

Norton plays the role of the acclaimed magician, Eisenheim the Illusionist. As a young child, Eisenheim fell in love with the beautiful Sophie. But their love wasn't meant to be and the poor Eisenheim was forbidden from seeing the wealthy, upper-class Sophie. Years later, Eisenheim has become one of the world's greatest illusionists. He performs in theaters to standing room only crowds and even Crown Prince Leopold (Sewell) is captivated by his skill and showmanship.

During one performance, Eisenheim invites the Crown Prince's fiancee onto the stage to assist in an illusion. Leopold's fiancee turns out to be Eisenheim's first love, Sophie. Together again after years of separation, the two rekindle their romance - and set in action events that will change everything.

The Bonus Features

The DVD is worthy of picking up despite its lack of substantial bonus features (the film sells this one, not the extras). The two behind the scenes featurettes are pretty much the standard fare and the commentary track, while interesting, is a little dry because it's just writer/director Neil Burger all on his own.
