The Bottom Line

Nancy Meyers' romantic comedy The Holiday is a fun romp targeted mainly at woman - although men might find a few things they can relate to within the film. Great for a date night at home, The Holiday's not one of those movies you have to engage your brain to enjoy - and sometimes, as in this case, that's a good thing.
Pros
  • Cute story featuring an adorable cast
  • A decent date movie
Cons
  • The commentary track is very dry

Guide Review - "The Holiday" DVD Review

The Story
Ever feel like just taking a vacation from your life? Maybe your job sucks, your co-workers are getting on your nerves, or your personal life is in shambles and you just want to go away to someplace where no one knows your name. Escaping from everything and everyone is the premise of Nancy Meyers' The Holiday starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black.

Diaz stars as Amanda, a hugely success LA businesswoman who kicks her cheating boyfriend out of her life just in time for the winter holidays. Winslet plays Iris, a British journalist who's devastated when her colleague/former lover announces his engagement. Both women want to just take a break and a website offering a home exchange program offers the perfect temporary solution to their problems.

Swapping lives, Amanda and Iris soon discover the grass is actually greener on the other side of the pond. While taking over for Amanda, Iris finds herself making sweet music with film composer Miles (Black). Meanwhile Amanda discovers Iris' handsome brother Graham (Law) is surprisingly entertaining company.

The Cast
Jack Black may not seem like the obvious choice to play Kate Winslet's love interest, but it works. The chemistry between Winslet and Black feels natural, as does the pairing of Cameron Diaz (a romantic comedy veteran) and Jude Law (who hasn't done a lot of romantic comedies in the past).
