The Bottom Line

Writer/director Alexandre Aja and screenwriting partner Gregory Levasseur bring Wes Craven's classic '70s horror film back to life with an expanded backstory and just as much blood and gore as the original film. Unlike a lot of remakes, this version of "The Hills Have Eyes" was done with the blessing and assistance of the original filmmaker. That little extra touch shows and "The Hills Have Eyes" - the '06 edition - is one of the better horror films (let alone remakes) of the last 10 years.

Guide Review - "The Hills Have Eyes" Unrated Version - DVD Review

Just like the original film, the 2006 remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" tracks a family stranded in the desert and surrounded by a clan of blood-thirsty killers. With nowhere to run and no way to reach help, the family is forced to defend themselves against deformed murderers.

"The Hills Have Eyes" is creepy and freaky, with a couple of genuine good frightening moments that are sure to shock even for the most hardened horror fan. Another big plus in the film's favor is the caliber of the cast, a cut above the standard horror film fare. Led by veteran actors Ted Levine and Kathleen Quinlan, the entire ensemble cast - including Aaron Stanford, Dan Byrd, Emilie de Ravin and Vinessa Shaw - does a fantastic job of portraying a family stuck in the middle of nowhere and hunted down by cannibalistic mutants.

The Bonus Features

Wes Craven's always fun to listen to and his commentary track (with producer Peter Locke) adds an interesting layer to this DVD by contrasting this remake with his original film. The behind the scenes features are better than average, with the 'Surviving the Hills' featurette particularly worth checking out. The featurette includes interviews with the actors and crew as well as an inside look at how specific scenes were shot.
