The Bottom Line

The Family Stone wasn't quite the box office hit it was expected to be given the stellar cast and intriguing storyline. For some odd reason it just didn't click with moviegoers. But now on DVD, The Family Stone might find the audience it failed to attract in theaters.

Although none of the characters are ones you can root for 100% of the time, The Family Stone works due to the talented cast and sharp dialogue.

  • Terrific performances by the ensemble cast
  • Does a good job of capturing the dynamics of a large family
  • Decent collection of bonus features
Cons
  • None worth noting

Guide Review - The Family Stone DVD Review

Diane Keaton and Craig T Nelson play the parents of Luke Wilson (the laidback adult), Dermot Mulroney (the businessman), Rachel McAdams (the independent spirit), Elizabeth Reaser (the maternal one) and Tyrone Giordano(the deaf and gay one) in The Family Stone, written and directed by Tom Bezucha.

When Everett (Mulroney) brings home his uptight big-city executive girlfriend, Meredith (Parker), the Stone family does everything possible to persuade Everett she's not the woman of his dreams. Meredith knows she's facing an uphill battle to win over Everett's family and yet everything she tries just makes matters worse.

From her annoying habit of clearing her throat to insulting remarks about homosexuals at the dinner table, Meredith makes enemies right and left instead of making friends. Things get really complicated when Everett's brother is bizarrely attracted to Meredith, a woman who couldn't be more of his opposite, and Everett falls for Meredith's beautiful sister.

The Bonus Features

At first I thought the commentary by Sarah Jessica Parker and Dermot Mulroney was annoying - but it grew on me. It's actually pretty entertaining if you can get past Parker's laugh. The two even own up to deliberately not talking over their own scenes and that's a first. The rest of the bonus features are pretty much the standard fare - behind the scenes interviews, how the film was cast, a boring bit from the film's World Premiere, and assorted deleted scenes.
