The big screen version of Dan Brown's critically acclaimed best selling novel "The Da Vinci Code" has been selected to open the 57th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2006. The festival audience will see the film two days before it opens in theaters worldwide.

"The Da Vinci Code" is an engrossing tale of a Harvard symbologist and a French cryptologist who team up to decipher a riddle left at a murder scene. The pair soon find themselves involved in a baffling mystery involving the works of Da Vinci and the secret society of the Priory of Sion.

Oscar-winner Tom Hanks stars as symbologist Robert Langdon. "Amelie" star Audrey Tautou plays the French cryptologist. Hanks' "Apollo 13" director Ron Howard helmed the film.

The 59th Cannes Film Festival will run May 17 - 28.
