Romany Malco on Staying in Control: "You know, youre going to see a [scene] in there where Erica Phillips, who plays my girlfriend, comes in and confronts Steve [Carell] because she found the dating card I dont want to tell too much And Steves response to her justifying my language on this dating card is murder. I literally had to step out so that they could shoot the scene because he had me laughing so hard."
On Why He Was Attracted to This Role: "I took on the project because mortgage was due. (Laughing) No, really, I think the reason I took the project on more so than anything was that the screenplay was funny. The screenplay was funny as hell and I will audition for something without necessarily assuming that Im hired.
What I did was I went in and just seeing the process, just seeing the work process I was with them for 2 ½ hours of improvising, that whole thing I was sold. The way that Judd worked and how open he was to my ideas, you know? Because the character was written for a caucasian cat a college frat boy kind of thing. But Judd let me make it my own in the first audition. After that I was like, 'This is my job!'"
Romany Malco on Shooting Scenes Just for the DVD: "Well thats how Judd Apatow works. He doesnt really shoot for the film; he shoots for the DVD. Thats his style. Im serious. And Id be like, Why am I doing this? I remember the day he had me making out with Jazzmun, the guy who plays the lady Or the lady who plays the lady... Im politically incorrect somewhere around here. But anyway, Im like, Yo, so why am I doing this? Hes like, Its for the DVD. 'I come in here for a day to do DVD work?!'"
