Judd Apatow on Deciding Which Scenes Made the Film and Which Wound Up on the DVD: How did Apatow decide when the comedy was crossing the line? Apatow explained, “It’s just a very personal subjective decision. If it makes me sick, I assume we should cut it out (laughing). I find that if I think the audience will think, ‘Oh, the filmmakers think they’re so clever or shocking,’ then it’s not good.

It really should feel like it’s important to the movie as a whole. If it separates itself, then it isn’t good – and we had a lot of stuff like that. I put them on the DVD so you could the mistakes we made, and some of it is hilarious. There’s a whole sequence of where you see what Andy thinks about when he tries to masturbate. We show all these different things we shot because we really thought that you would want to know what he does, sexually. And it all felt like too much. Some of it actually I never tested it and I showed the deleted scenes at the Austin Film Festival and some of it got really big laughs. (Laughing) I thought, ‘Oh maybe I could have put that in the movie…’ But it’s fun. See it on the DVD and see when we did cross the line – what happened."

Judd Apatow on the Unrated Version of “The 40 Year Old Virgin:” “When it comes to the DVD, we added back 17 minutes because there was a longer version of the story that had a lot of scenes that we think are great, but we knew no one wanted to sit in a movie theater that long. But you can sit on your a** and eat potato chips and watch it over the course of a week if you want to at home. And we put out the theatrical version on DVD also, if you want to see that version.”

Judd Apatow on “The 40 Year Old Virgin” Being Released During the Year-End Holiday Season: With all the new DVDs and other holiday goodies, Apatow offered a reason to pick up “The 40 Year Old Virgin” on DVD totally in keeping with the tone of the movie. “Well, I think it’s in the spirit of the season to watch a film where a man urinates in his own face. (Laughing) That’s part of your yuletide cheer.”
