According to Variety, writer/director/actor/singer Kevin Spacey has signed on to play the role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming movie, "Superman," directed by Bryan Singer and starring Brandon Routh as Superman.

Kate Bosworth is in talks to play Lois Lane. If Bosworth signs on, "Superman" would reunite her with her "Beyond the Sea" director/co-star.

"Superman" brings Kevin Spacey back to work for Bryan Singer. Their first collaboration, "The Usual Suspects," lead to an Oscar for Spacey. Commenting to Variety, Spacey said, "The huge attraction for me was the chance to work with Bryan again. Lex Luthor is a wonderful role."

Explaining the storyline of "Superman," Bryan Singer told Variety, "It's a little like 'X-Men,' where the mutants existed when the movie began," Singer said. "It's not an origin story; I didn't want to remake what Richard Donner did so well in the original, and didn't want to tread on the great work they're doing on 'Smallville.' He's already part of the culture; he has left the planet. This is the story of his return."

Production on "Superman" is expected to begin in early March 2005.
