(Jan 11, 2005) - DreamWorks Pictures plans on adapting the hit Broadway musical "Dreamgirls" for the big screen. Academy Award-winning screenwriter Bill Condon ("Gods and Monsters") will adapt the story from the musical and direct the movie. Laurence Mark will produce the film.

In a statement issued by DreamWorks, head of production Adam Goodman said, "'Dreamgirls' is a timeless musical with a story and music that has thrilled and entertained theatergoers around the world. With Bill Condon at the helm, I know it has all the ingredients to enthrall today's movie audiences."

DreamWorks principal David Geffen has a history with "Dreamgirls," having produced the original stage production. "Dreamgirls" opened on Broadway in 1981 and ran for four years. During its run, "Dreamworks" picked up six Tony Awards and eight additional Tony nominations.

According to the studio, the film version of "Dreamgirls" will retain the award-winning book and music of Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger including the songs "One Night Only" and "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going."
