The Bottom Line

This touching movie takes the romantic comedy genre and adds its own little spin. While I'd hate to limit the film's appeal to audiences, "Something New" is definitely more for women than men.

Guide Review - "Something New" DVD Review

Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker star in this moving tale of interracial dating. Lathan plays career woman/workaholic Kenya Denise McQueen, a lady who believes she doesn't have the time necessary to devote to a relationship. And even if she could fit one in, practically no man is capable of living up to her standards.

Simon Baker enters the picture as Brian, a landscaper who throws Kenya for a loop. Kenya rejects the idea of dating Brian when the two are set up on a disastrous blind date but Brian isn't ready to give up so easy. Taking a job designing Kenya's backyard, Brian slowly and patiently makes a connection with Kenya. Kenya in turn warms to the handsome man who is making her dream backyard a reality. The two begin to get serious but find not everyone they encounter is quite as accepting of their interracial relationship.

The DVD Bonus Features

The "Something New" DVD comes with only a couple of bonus features and without any commentary tracks. There's a short but entertaining featurette in which members of the cast disclose their own personal do's and don'ts of dating. The other extra feature - the 'Making Of' featurette - is a fluff piece that's nice but forgettable.

I was surprised how much I liked this movie even though I had never heard any previews. I suppose it is a chick-flick but guys could really learn something from the character Brian about what women want. It was so refreshing to see a man/character who can really pay attention and see through the issues and hang-ups some women carry with them, a guy who can really communicate well instead of needing liquid courage to show true feelings. My congrats to the writers of this movie, by showing people that some relationships are worth the work they require. I loved how it also showed that being happy with yourself and your partner is more important than your so-called image and who you are trying to impress. Simon Baker is so believable and also has a smile that is unforgettable!!! I can't wait for his next movie.
