The buzz on Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is building as the comedy/drama enters the awards season with a win at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. Boyle's tale of an 18-year-old orphan who competes on India's Who Wants to be a Millionaire? TV show took home the Cadillac People's Choice Award, the only award voted on by the festival audience.

Additional winners at the TIFF include Steve McQueen's Hunger (Diesel Discovery Award), Derick Martini's Lymelife (Prize of the International Critics [FIPRESCI Prize] for Discovery), Steve Jacobs' Disgrace (Prize of the International Critics [FIPRESCI Prize] for Special Presentations), Rodrigue Jean's Lost Song (City of Toronto-Citytv Award for Best Canadian Feature Film), and Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Madeline Piujuq Ivalu's Before Tomorrow (Citytv Award for Best Canadian First Feature Film).

This year's festival included 83 short films and 249 feature length films.
