Ken Kwapis on Why He's the Right Man to Direct "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants:" "Well, I was a girl in a previous lifetime. No, the truth is I read the screenplay and of course it’s about young women, but the problems that they deal with are problems that I dealt with. They’re problems that all men and women deal with so it never occurred to me that I couldn’t direct this. And the truth is, I just love stories with strong emotional content. This definitely has it. In fact, I’ll be walking up and down the aisles with a box of Kleenex at the premiere.

I also feel like unlike certain films that are a little syrupy, I feel like the emotional content of this is presented very honestly. Forget my efforts for a second, the four actresses I don’t think any of them – the four leads, I’ll say five because Jenna Boyd, she’s like our 5th Beatle – the five are incapable of doing anything that’s not honest. They’re incapable of faking it."

Finding the Right Cast to Make Up the Sisterhood: "The stars lined up. I mean it took a lot of searching but at the end of the day there was also a little, I think, providence. I think providence had a hand."

Ken Kwapis on Hiring Newcomer Blake Lively as One of the Four Leads: "There’s no lack of young, blonde, cute actresses in Hollywood. The real issue was finding someone who wasn’t glamorous, who wasn’t overly experienced in life. And the wonderful thing about Blake is she’s completely fresh, she’s completely natural. She has this striking body and this wonderful physicality but you always feel like she’s still a kid."

"Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" Writer Ann Brashares' Involvement in the Film: "She came to the set but in fact Ann was not part of the development of the picture. Not for bad reasons, she was busy writing the third book. But she visited the set and I’m happy to say she loves the picture. She’s very happy."

Ken Kwapis on Making Sure the Movie Does Justice to the Book: "Adapting a book like this there’s a certain obligation to honor the readers. It’s also very liberating. Often times Hollywood studios will kind of force you to make a lot of conventional choices about the book or the story. With this book, it’s so important to honor the readers that when in doubt, we just went back to the book. So in a way it was very liberating to have such a beloved source."

Ken Kwapis on the Possibility of a Sequel: "I’m hoping. Books two and three - 'The Second Summer of the Sisterhood' and 'Girls in Pants' - they take the characters in such unexpected directions. They will make two very uncommon sequels."
