"Sideways" Earns Five Oscar Nominations

Including Best Picture and Best Director

By , About.com Guide

LOS ANGELES,Jan. 25, 2005 - The indie hit "SIDEWAYS" continued to make history today racking up five Academy Award(R) nominations including Best Picture. "SIDEWAYS" joins an elite group of comedies that have been recognized by the Academy including "Shakespeare in Love," "Forrest Gump," "Driving Miss Daisy," "Annie Hall" and "The Apartment."

The $16-million film -- a budget half that of any other Best Picture nominee -- is the first film in history to win Best Picture at the Golden Globes(R) and the New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, and Broadcast Film Critics Awards. To date, "SIDEWAYS" has won 15 Best Picture awards and has appeared on over 350 Top Ten lists. Its Oscar(R) nominations represent the most ever received by a Fox Searchlight film.

"It's an actors-driven comedy up against some big studio movies -- it really is David vs. Goliath," said Peter Rice, President of Fox Searchlight Pictures. "It's exciting because it proves that when comedies resonate on a deeper level, they can achieve recognition from the Academy and audiences alike."

"Alexander Payne fought to make the kind of comedy he wanted to make -- with a cast and a script that felt honest," said Michael London, Producer of "SIDEWAYS." "To see that risk pay off with audiences, and now with the Academy, is tremendously rewarding."

Since the October 22nd release, "SIDEWAYS" has grossed an impressive $33 million at the box office, with the wide release set for January 28th.
