The Bottom Line
This is a different type of role than what we've grown used to seeing Martin play, and at times it's a little uncomfortable to watch him as the love interest of the 24-year-old Danes. If you can get past that, the movie's a decent relationship dramedy with Schwartzman thrown in to provide comic relief.

Guide Review - "Shopgirl" DVD Review
Claire Danes stars as Mirabelle, an aspiring artistic who works in a department store in order to pay the rent. One day while behind the counter of the store's glove compartment, Mirabelle is approached by Ray, an older, sophisticated man (Steve Martin) who shows an interest in more than just the gloves Mirabelle's employed to sell.In a classic case of when it rains it pours, Mirabelle is also approached by a man more her own age named Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman) while at a local laundrymat. Both men are interested in her and she accepts dates with the two strikingly different fellows. While Jeremy doesn't appear to have much going for him - the poor guy even forgets to bring along a prophylactic on an evening when sex is in the air - Ray has everything including wealth, good taste, and he knows how to treat a lady. But who Mirabelle ultimately ends up with isn't the point of "Shopgirl," it's all about the journey she takes to get there.
