Princess Diaries 2 Royal Engagement

"Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" on DVD

Buena Vista Home Entertainment

The Bottom Line

Since I'm not part of the key demographic (pre-teen/teenage girls) who are the target audience for this fluffy romantic comedy, it's tough to find as much enjoyment in watching Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, and the rest of the gang go through the trials and tribulations associated with growing up royal as it was the first time around. "Princess Diaries" was a cute movie. "Princess Diaries 2" feels a little recycled, but young teens may still be able to get into the movie's goofball fun.

Guide Review - "Princess Diaries 2" DVD Review

The principal cast of "Princess Diaries" return for this 2004 sequel which finds Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) getting ready to assume the throne of the fictional Genovia. After finishing college, Mia heads off her homeland only to discover it's stuck in Medieval times - at least as far as marriage is concerned. It seems the Royal rules dictate Mia must be married before she can become Queen, which means she's got just 30 days to find Mr. Right or lose the crown.

Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, and Hector Elizondo easily recapture the spirit of their "Princess Diaries" characters. Hathaway, and her character, Mia, have matured a little since the first movie but the sense of discovery and fun is still evident in Hathaway's portrayal of a young royal. And Julie Andrews... She's just such a classy lady on the screen it's hard not to just smile whenever she's in the frame. But even with the warmth these actors bring to their roles, "Princess Diaries 2" feels a little like a made-for-TV follow-up to the hit 2001 movie than a stand-alone feature film. Then again, Garry Marshall doesn't make his movies to please critics; he makes them for a specific audience.

As far as bonus features, the "Princess Diaries 2" DVD has a good assortment of goodies. Fans of Raven are going to particularly enjoy the lengthy behind-the-scenes featurette she hosts, which includes cast interviews and music from the movie's soundtrack.
