Johnny Depp returns for more adventures on the high seas as Captain Jack Sparrow, the pirate equivalent of a rock and roll bad boy in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the second film of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. This time around Captain Jack is called upon to pay off a debt owed to Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). Unfortunately for Jack's 'friends' and crew, the captain has decided he's not quite ready to turn his soul over to the devil of the deep sea.

The Joy of Playing Captain Jack Sparrow: “I kind of like everything about playing him. I feel like he's just good fun to play. Ted [Elliott] and Terry [Rossio] and Gore [Verbinski] kind of set a course in terms of the story and all of that, and then you take that or the very solid bones of that structure and get to run with that a little bit, get to play with it a little bit. You get to add stuff and try things and get away with it, just to see what you can get away with. I've been very lucky so far, and he's just a really fun character. I certainly wasn't ready to say goodbye to him after the first film. I felt like there was a lot more to be done, more fun to be had."

Why the Special Spring in Captain Jack’s Step This Time Around?: “I don't know. I was just sort of doing what I do. All the sort of things that are happening in the world or in your world immediately, sort of affect the way that you approach your day and all of that. That can't help, but sort of seep into the work, I guess. It probably made it a little easier that I wasn't getting the phone calls, the panicked, worried phone calls like, 'What the hell are you doing? You're ruining the movie!' I didn't get those this time. That might have helped to add a little bit of spring, but I don't know because I haven't seen the spring. I haven't seen the film, so I don't know. I'm scared to see it."

Consulting the First Film for Continuity: Depp actually avoids watching the first film and didn’t view it again prior to work on Pirates 2 & 3. “"No. Oh, God, no. No. No. For a while there, not so much these days because they've seen it a million times, but for a while there my kiddies were watching Pirates 1. They're taking a break on that now and have moved into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for a while, and now my son is into Spider-Man and things like that. For a while there though they were watching Pirates 1 and you sort of walk into the room looking for something and suddenly you head that familiar score or voice and just exit as quickly as possible, so that I didn't have to see it again or see me again, really. The movie itself is good fun, but I just don't enjoy looking at myself."

Depp says the experience of watching his kids watch his films is just part of life, and doesn’t have any impact on their relationship. “Does it affect my relationship with them? Not as much as you might think because to them it's normal. It's all they've ever known, seeing poppa on television or on the DVD cover. So they've never not had that. It's not weird to them at all. They can go from sort of watching the movie to the dinner table and not mention the film at all. Then again, there are other times where my daughter might say, 'What was that line in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory about the hep cats and the motorbike riders and stuff? Will you do the voice?' And I'll do it and she'll say thanks and we move on to the next thing."

Johnny Depp’s Now Immortalized as Part of the Pirates Ride at Disneyland: “It's totally surreal. Who would've ever thought of that? But it is exciting. I don't know that that kind of thing will ever make sense at least to me. It might make sense to someone else, but not to me. It'll always be surprising."

An In-Depth Report on Johnny Depp’s Teeth: When asking a question of Depp, be specific. A generic one put to Depp by a journalist at the press junket led to the following exchange: Question - Can you talk about your teeth? Depp’s response - “Talk about my teeth? Well, I've had many problems over the years. Several root canals. Once they found an eight millimetre, the tip of a drill bit in one of the canals. That was horrible. That was a six hour ordeal. I'm sorry, go ahead..."

The follow-up query regarding the caps on his teeth for the Pirates of the Caribbean films elicited the sought-after answer. “What they do is some sort of like, I don't know if it's a filing or not,” explained Depp. “They do something to make the surface of the tooth kind of rough, like a normal bonding sort of thing. Then they hot glue and laser these things on. They bond these things onto my own choppers. The process of taking them off can be ugly. Sometimes it just comes off - shoots off - and other times you have to really address the issue more intensely. I don't really notice them anymore. I'm kind of used to them now." Depp says they’ll stay on through the completion of Pirates 3. “Then I'll have to go through that process of yanking them."
