While participating in press rounds for Cameron Crowe’s “Elizabethtown,” Orlando Bloom was, of course, peppered with questions about the status of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and the as-of-yet-untitled “Pirates of the Caribbean 3.”

Taking their cue from other recent big budget action films, “Pirates of the Caribbean” filmmakers are working on “Pirates” parts 2 and 3 at the same time. Bloom said that right now, “We’ve done bits of 3. We’re back on finishing up on 2 before we go back to finish up 3 next year.”

Bloom wouldn’t reveal much of the specifics of either of the two “Pirates” sequels. In fact when he was asked about what we can expect from “Dead Man’s Chest,” Bloom said, “I’m not telling you. You’ll have to go and see it. It’s really very good. [Director Gore Verbinski’s] absolutely right in terms of he’s not going to let the second one be any less than the first.”

One thing Orlando Bloom was willing to comment on was how the two “Pirates” sequels will compare to the original blockbuster film. “It’s just all getting better. The development of the characters is really important because it’s not like rehashing the same old territory. You can’t go too far away from it. …You can’t just suddenly say, ‘Now we’re doing something completely different,’ because people know what they want. But it’s about developing characters, relationships, while maintaining the core of what you’re doing with the movie. He’s such a talented director. It’s a monster of a project and it’s being well handled.”

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” is scheduled to hit theaters in July 2006. “Pirates of the Caribbean 3” will follow in 2007.
