By Rebecca Murray, About.com

July 2005 - According to The Hollywood Reporter, Academy Award-winning director Clint Eastwood has begun casting his World War II epic, "Flags of Our Fathers," based on the book by James Bradley. Eastwood and Steven Spielberg will produce the movie for DreamWorks Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Ryan Phillippe, Adam Beach ("Windtalkers"), and Jesse Bradford will star in the Eastwood movie, which centers on the Battle of Iwo Jima. The 1945 battle will forever be remembered not only due to the fact it was a turning point in World War II, but because of the lasting image of U.S. servicemen raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi.

Phillippe has been cast as US Navy corpsman John Bradley, the father of the book's author and a man who never wanted to discuss his military service with his friends or family. Adam Beach co-stars as Ira Hayes and Bradford takes on the role of Rene Gagnon, one of the men who raised the American flag.

Ryan Phillippe was last seen in the indie ensemble drama, "Crash," and has completed work on "Five Fingers" and "Chaos." Jesse Bradford is starring in "Heights," currently in theaters and has "Happy Endings" set for release this month.
