Ray describes the film as "a story about lying in the pursuit of truth. It's also about how our mentors can teach us even as they are betraying us." Inspired by true events, "Breach" is set in the world of the FBI and follows Eric O'Neill (Phillippe), a low-level flunkie who moves up in the ranks after being chosen for a choice assignment.
O'Neill is chosen to work with veteran operative Robert Hanssen (Cooper) in the newly created division of the FBI named 'information assurance.' But O'Neill soon finds out Hanssen is suspected of a being a mole and is the subject of a top-secret investigation. The FBI higher-ups want O'Neill to buddy up with Hanssen to draw him out. The two become entangled in a spy-versus-spy game in which O'Neill has to bring down Hanssen before Hanssen can destroy O'Neill's family and the country he's sworn to protect.
Linney co-stars as Special Agent Kate Burroughs and Dennis Haysbert is Special Agent Dan Plesac. Kathleen Quinlan, Gary Cole, Caroline Dhavernas, Bruce Davison and Mary Jo Deschanel have also been cast in "Breach."
