Answer: William Wyler holds the record for the most Best Director nominations with 12. Wyler was nominated for his work on "Dodsworth," "Wuthering Heights," "The Letter," "The Little Foxes," "The Heiress," "Detective Story," "Roman Holiday," "Friendly Persuasion," and "The Collector." Wyler won the Best Director Oscar for "Mrs. Miniver," "The Best Years of Our Lives," and "Ben-Hur."

John Ford won the Academy Award for Best Director more times than any other nominee. Ford won the Oscar four out of the five times he was nominated, taking home the Academy Award for "The Quiet Man," "How Green Was My Valley," "The Grapes of Wrath," and "The Informer." His work on "Stagecoach" earned him a nomination however he lost out to Victor Fleming for "Gone with the Wind."
