Despite the ugly weather spirits were high as the film's veteran stars, including Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald, and Angela Lansbury (who returned to movies after a 20 year absence to play wicked Aunt Adelaide in "Nanny McPhee"), were joined on the red carpet by some of the film's younger actors - Thomas Sangster, Eliza Bennett, and Sam Honywood - as well as the film's director, Kirk Jones.
"Nanny McPhee" is based on the "Nurse Matilda" children's book series by Christianna Brand and was adapted for the screen by Emma Thompson, the multi-talented actress who's already won two Academy Awards. Thompson earned Best Actress honors in 1993 for "Howards End" and took home the Academy Award in 1996 for adapting Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility." "Nanny McPhee" marks Thompson's first screenplay since scripting "Sense and Sensibility."
The film follows Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), a newly widowed father of seven who has no control over his unruly kids. With the oldest boy Simon (Thomas Sangster) as the ringleader, the children have managed to scare away 17 nannies. Mr Brown's at his wits' end when suddenly the bizarre-looking Nanny McPhee (Thompson) appears on his doorstep. The kids soon learn they're no match for the magical Nanny McPhee.
All of the stars of the film agree that the major appeal of working on "Nanny McPhee" was it's a feel-good film for the entire family - and something we don't see everyday. They also agreed that working with writer/actress Thompson was a joy and that she and director Kirk Jones made the set a fun one for all involved.
