Producer Lucas Foster on the Tone of “Mr and Mrs Smith:” “It’s a romantic comedy with gunfire to Simon [Kinberg, writer] and Doug [Liman, director] and I. We’re really committed to making a relationship movie. It’s an action movie too, but it’s kind of an accidental action movie.”

Balancing the Characters and the Action of “Mr and Mrs Smith:” Foster said they achieved the right balance by “focusing on the characters and not emphasizing the car flipping over. By emphasizing the people and what they’re going through. The John and Jane Smith problems are what we pay attention to.”

Foster on the Possibility of a Sequel: “I don’t know. The movie hasn’t even come out yet. It’s kind of hard to talk about the sequel at this stage. But never say never right? But we did accomplish a lot in the first movie. I don’t know what the sequel would be.”

The Onscreen Chemistry Between “Mr and Mrs Smith” Stars, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt: “We were really lucky. We knew that Angelina was amazing and when we lost Nicole [Kidman] we were trying to figure out who would be a good replacement for her. And you know, honestly I can’t even imagine the movie now with anyone else. We were incredibly lucky or smart or a combination of the two things. Their chemistry no one could predict. But they look good together. They have a certain equality in terms of their toughness and stuff that we knew was there.”

Foster on His Upcoming Projects: “I have ‘The Night Watchman’ next and another movie with Keanu Reeves after that. Akiva [Goldsman] and I are doing it together at Warner Bros. It’s based on a famous book from the 70s, a spy novel, about a retired assassin who really is retired and doesn’t want to go back to work. And various forces conspire to pull him back into active duty.”
