White and Hess are working on the script with Hess directing. According to a press release issued by Nickelodeon, "Nacho Libre" is inspired by the true story of a Mexican priest who moonlights as a masked Lucha Libre wrestler in order to save an orphanage that's about to be closed. He must keep his identity hidden from both the wrestling community and the church.
Commenting on the film, Black said, "I can't think of two people I'd rather party with than Mike White and Jared Hess. I can't wait to get down to Mexico."
Julia Pistor, Senior Vice President of Nickelodeon Movies, said, "Nickelodeon Movies takes pride in partnering with some of today's biggest stars and filmmakers who are equally committed to creating edgy family films. Jack, Mike and Jared's enthusiasm, spontaneity, and comedic prowess makes them a perfect fit for this project."
This will be the third time Jack Black and Mike White have worked together. The two played roommates in "School of Rock," and appeared together in "Orange County," also written by White.
Jack Black, Mike White, Julia Pistor, and David Klawans will produce the movie.
