Battlestar Galactica producer/director Michael Rymer has agreed to direct Witchblade, a feature film based on the best-selling fantasy comic book from Top Cow.
In announcing Rymer's signing Platinum Studios, Top Cow, and Arclight Films opted to keep the storyline of the movie a secret. The studios would only reveal that it will remain true to the source material and feature "an ornate, jewel-encrusted gauntlet that gives superpowers to the wearer, a chosen female bearer of each generation, who possesses it."
"Michael Rymer is one of those creative forces who can blend myth, legend, iconic visuals and dramatic story into edge-of-your-seat action thrillers," said Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Chairman and CEO of Platinum Studios, in the press release announcing the deal. "I believe that Michael's instincts with this character and world are spot on."
Director Rymer added, "Witchblade is an opportunity to break some new ground – to approach a comic book adaptation in a very different way. While I am excited by the opportunity, I am intensely protective of the fans' expectation of this comic-to-film adaptation."
Witchblade marks Rymer's return to feature films. His last movie, Queen of the Damned starring Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend, was released in 2002. Rymer, Gary Hamilton, Nigel Odell, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Steve Squillante will produce Witchblade with Marc Silvestri, Rich Marincic, Randy Greenberg, and Matt Hawkins executive producing.
