By , About.com Guide

April 13, 2006 - Emily Watson (Corpse Bride) has signed on to star in the movie version of Dick King-Smith's book, The Water Horse. Ben Chaplin and Alex Etel have also secured roles in the film, to be directed by Jay Russell (Ladder 49) for Walden Media, Beacon Pictures, and Revolution Studios.

Robert Nelson Jacobs ("The Shipping News," "Chocolat") adapted King-Smith's book. The film will be produced by Robert Bernstein, Douglas Rae, Barrie Osborne and Charlie Lyons. Production is expected to begin in May 2006 in New Zealand and Scotland.

Weta Digital's Joe Letteri (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, King Kong) is the visual effects supervisor on The Water Horse. Letteri and Weta Digital colleagues Brian Van't Hul, Christian Rivers and Richard Taylor, took home the Achievement in Visual Effects Oscar for their work on Peter Jackson's King Kong.

The Water Horse tells the story of a lonely Scottish boy who discovers a mysterious egg on the shore of a loch. The egg hatches and a 'water horse' - a mythical sea monster - emerges. As the water horse grows, the boy has to find new ways to protect him from those who would do the creature harm.
